The festivities begin on Palm Sunday (Domenica delle Palme) with a procession of palms and olive branches. Then on Good Friday (Venderdi Santo) each neighborhood in Cortona carries a 2000-pound statue of suffering Christ up and down the mountain. However, at midnight on Holy Saturday (Sabato Santo) a statue of the resurrected Christ is run into the main duomo. On the following day friends and families gather for their own form of communion.

On February 22, 2009, the town of Cortona celebrated the life of its patron saint, Santa Margharita. She is the patron saint of the homeless, the orphaned, single mothers, and the mentally ill.
